to the sandy hook massacre and three more victims will be laid to rest today. nguyen rals will be held for kathlyn hubbard, benjamin wheeler and ann marie murphy, a special education teacher. joining me now, msnbc contributor, michael smerkonish. michael, we heard the host of the nra webcast saying the president, getting his hands on essentially their guns. why would we expect the nra to say anything different from what's being broadcast on its show tomorrow? >> that's a narrative they have fostered about president obama for the last at least four years. and the practical effect of that, tamron, is to cause a run on guns and ammunition, the likes of which you are seeing right now at walmart where certain of the weapons have run out. they're selling them at that rapid of a clip and yet the reality is that the folks at the brady foundation given very poor grades to the president throughout the course of the first administration. why would they say it? that's what they're in business to do. i'm optimistic they'll take a different approach tomorrow because of that pledge of meaningful cont

has proclaimed tomorrow a day of mourning for the victims of the sandy hook elementary school shooting. gun violence is not a suburban issue or an urban issue. it's an american issue. here, in chicago, gun violence is an epidemic. take a look at this map of the city. the yellow dots mark all of the shootings that have taken place in chicago this year alone. the red dots represent people killed by gun violence in 2012. all toll, 465 people have been killed in chicago this year. including 62 school-aged children. all of these murders and mass killings are tragedies. we've had almost segregated response. every child's life should have equal value. yet, too many people have been silent about the murders in places like chicago. the gun debate has been raging for a long time chlts but none of us have done enough. yesterday, the president was asked this question. >> this is not the first issue of horrific gun violence of your four years. where have you been? >> where has he been? where has the congress been? where has everybody been? gun violence wasn't part of the national debate in the pres

in sandy hook elementary last week. some historically pro-gun lawmakers came out in support of the assault weapons ban. can they rally their colleagues to act and act swiftly? big question for me tonight, and with me tonight are msnbc political analyst ron reagan and real clear politics reporter erin mcpike. i was stunned to see bobby casey, the senator from pennsylvania, who is a classic pennsylvanian, in the past he's received a b plus or an a rating from the nra. he tolded philadelphia enquirer he will come back for -- coming out for a new assault weapons ban and legislation banning high round magazines. he said his decision amounted to being summoned by your conscience. he said his wife had pressed him to rethink his position on gun safety in the wake of newtown. he said the power of the weapon, the number of bullets that hit each child, that was so, to me, just so chilling, it haunts me. it should haunt every public official. if those two bills come before the senate i will vote for both. these a risky strong position by bob casey. >> he's not the only one. joe manchin, the senator fr

, a national review article claimed that the sandy hook tragedy occurred because women were running the school. and what the school needed was "male aggression for protection." the article made no mention of the fact that male aggression was the problem. this same sexist and frankly insane line of reasoning is what keeps women out of military combat even though they have time and again proven to be heroes. like kimberly munley, the police officer who took down the shooter in the 2009 fort hood massacre that killed 14 people. last month four female service members and the aclu filed a federal lawsuit to overturn the pentagon's exclusion of women from combat. they argue that the restrictions are unconstitutional and have created "a brass ceiling." i love that. the plaintiffs all have served in iraq or afghanistan in dangerous combat-related missions. two even have purple hearts, a combat declaration after being wounded on the battlefield. zoe bedell is one of the plaintiffs. she joins me here in new york to discuss wh
